The Vatican reports that Pope Francis (88) is still recovering from pneumonia and had two additional respiratory episodes on Monday which required two different bronchoscopies.
The world was alarmed when the Argentine pope was hospitalised at the Gemelli hospital in Rome on 14 February after developing pneumonia in both lungs from bronchitis.
According to the Vatican, the pope required the oxygen mask on Friday and Saturday, but not on Sunday, when he participated in mass and spent the rest of the day alternating rest with prayer.
In its weekly medical update, the Vatican reported on Monday that the pope had undergone two bronchoscopies to “aspirate abundant secretions”.
“Today, the Holy Father experienced two episodes of acute respiratory failure, caused by a significant accumulation of endobronchial mucus and consequent bronchospasm,” the Vatican said in a statement.
This marks Francis’s 18th day in hospital, the longest of his papacy.
