Legendary Bafana Bafana player Benni McCarthy has allegedly agreed in principle to take over as head coach of Kenya’s national football team, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his coaching career.
Benni McCarthy is a highly regarded South African football figure, known for his successful career as a striker South Africa and in Europe.
He rose to prominence playing for clubs like Ajax Amsterdam, Celta Vigo, FC Porto, and Blackburn Rovers. Notably, he’s South Africa’s all-time top scorer for the national team, Bafana Bafana.
He’s held head coach positions at Cape Town City and AmaZulu in South Africa, demonstrating his capabilities as a manager. More recently, he served as a first-team coach at Manchester United, gaining valuable experience in a top-tier European setting
With a formal unveiling by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) set for Friday, McCarthy is anticipated to arrive in Nairobi this week to complete the deal, according to iDiski Times.
Kenya’s football team missed out on qualifying for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Morocco and currently sit fourth in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying group.
The forthcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Gabon and Gambia on 17 and 24 March, respectively, will be his first priority.
According to MozzartSport, Benni will arrive in Kenya with Moeneeb Josephs as his goalkeeper coach. The two were teammates at Orlando Pirates and Josephs was also part of McCarthy’s backroom staff at AmaZulu.
