Musician and reality television star Zwai Bala recently took to social media to share a heartfelt message celebrating his daughter’s 14th birthday.
“Happy 14th birthday, my princess, maDikela,” he wrote, expressing his love and pride for his daughter.
His ex-wife, Melanie Bala, also shared a touching tribute, reflecting on how quickly the past fourteen years have flown by.
“My big little girl is 14??? I mean, I get it—I was there when you were born—but oh my, how you’ve grown in the last year! In an incredibly busy and challenging year, you put your head down and worked hard—excelling at school, participating in extra-murals, performing in The Lion King Jr, supporting your brother, and so much more,” she wrote.
Melanie went on to express her pride in the remarkable young woman her daughter is becoming:
“I’m so proud of your kindness, your depth, your talent, your love for family and friends, your relentless quest to have fun, and your ability to look cute while doing it. But above all, I’m proud of the incredible young lady you’re becoming. You’re going to live the life of your dreams because you work so hard for what you want—I’m just along for the ride!”
In December 2024, Zwai and Melanie Bala came together once again, this time to celebrate their son Sean Bala’s return from initiation school in Gqeberha. Dressed in traditional isiXhosa attire, the proud parents hosted an umgidi—a Xhosa ceremony that marks a young man’s (umkhwetha) return from the mountain (ulwaluko).
The event was attended by family, friends, and industry colleagues, showcasing the importance of culture and family unity.
Zwai and Melanie finalised their divorce in 2017 after 17 years together, including 10 years of marriage. At the time, they released a joint statement confirming their separation.
Despite the end of their marriage, the pair have demonstrated an inspiring ability to co-parent harmoniously, prioritising their children’s well-being and celebrating their milestones together.
