Zwai Bala and Melanie Bala joined forces to celebrate the return of their son Sean Bala from initiation school in Gqeberha on Thursday, 26 December.
The elated parents were dressed in their traditional isiXhosa regalia and were joined by family, friends and industry colleagues at their son’s umgidi, which in the Xhosa culture is a ceremony that celebrates a boy’s (umkhwetha) return from the mountain (ulwaluko).
In October 2017, the couple released a joint statement confirming their separation and divorce proceedings. They were together for a total of 17 years and had been married for 10 of those years.
Melanie who also shares a 13-year-old daughter, Peyton Bala, with Zwai took to Instagram to express her gratitude to her ex-husband and revealed that the secret to their co-parenting relationship is the fact that they always put their children first.
“For working so hard to make this happen, for explaining (as much as is allowed) around the steps involved in Sean’s initiation, for assuring me that you would be there every step of the way, for being patient with my 100 questions, for being progressive and open-minded, for bringing my heart back safely to me – Enkosi kakhulu TaKaLitha,” said Melanie.
Some of the guests who were in attendance include broadcaster Nothemba Madumo and TKZee star Kabelo Mabalane.
