A multi-vehicle accident on the N3 between Van Reenen and Tugela Plaza has claimed the lives of 18 people.
A truck, minibus and a light motor vehicle crashed, killing 13 adults and five children. One baby escaped with significant injuries.
The crash occurred in rainy and hazy weather. The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) crash investigators are now on the site determining the exact reason of the crash.
The South African Weather Service has issued a warning for severe weather conditions in several regions of the country, advising motorists to reduce speed, increase following distance, and keep their lights on.
“Members of the National Traffic Police and the South African Police Service worked the whole night to clear the scene and provide assistance to the affected road users. The road was eventually opened this morning after almost 10 hours,”
“Drivers are also advised to avoid nighttime travel, as evidence has shown that this is the time at which most fatal crashes happen,” said RTMC in a statement on Tuesday.
