In 2023, local businesses, non-profits, publishers, producers, and developers in South Africa received R118 billion in new revenue from Google’s products and services.
This is supported by a Google Economic Impact study that was carried out by Public First, a strategy, research, and policy firm, on behalf of the internet powerhouse.
Google offers a wide range of products that can be valuable for businesses
According to the study, Google’s economic impact on South Africa’s economy last year was projected to be R118 billion. This impact was obtained from products and services such as infrastructure development, start-up help, and the introduction of innovative tools and services.
This covers revenue generated by services like Google Play, Android, YouTube, Google Cloud, Google Search, Google Advertising, and Google’s efforts to promote talent development among others.
Kaya Biz spoke to Abongile Mashele, Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy at Google SA.
Mashele shared that Google Search and Google Workspace help knowledge workers save over 2.5 million hours a week. This is equivalent to a R72 billion improvement in productivity for the country’s economy.
