The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Education (DoE) has condemned the recent bullying incident at Verulam Secondary School.
This was after a video of a female learner being assaulted by a fellow female student was widely shared across social media.
In the video, the victim shields her face as her alleged attacker repeatedly strikes her on the back of the head and neck.
Unidentified, the bully also kicks and tries to punch her victim in the punch, while several students stand around and watch.
The incident sparked uproar, especially because the learner recording the video further taunted the victim by laughing incessantly as she was being assaulted. The KZN DoE said an investigation into the incident is underway, and appropriate measures will be implemented.
“The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education is deeply concerned about the recent incident at Verulam Secondary School, where one learner was the victim of an assault by another learner.
We acknowledge the severity of this matter and want to reassure the public that we address incidents of violence and bullying with the utmost seriousness.
We will work closely with the school administration to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident and to implement appropriate measures in line with our policies and procedures.”
