The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) is cracking the whip on the “soft life” that South African prisoners are enjoying and have begun conducting raids to confiscate contraband from inmates.
On Wednesday evening, 24 July a raid at “Sun City” prison in Meredale, south of Johannesburg, uncovered shocking contraband including marijuana, rizla, makeup, TVs, laptops, PlayStation consoles and other electronics.
Kaya News reporter Katleho Sekhotho spoke to Correctional Services Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale, who said there are various ways the contraband gets into prisons.
According to Thobakgale, inmates are given the opportunity to declare the contraband.
