A listener shared that her father was convicted when their daughter was only 6 months old. He was recently released from prison, almost 10 years later, and now wants to be involved in their child’s life.
What frustrates the listener is that the father’s family knew about the child but never made any effort to connect with her or offer any support. She feels like it’s a little too late and believes that her daughter will decide when she turns eighteen if she wants to connect with her father.
Reaching out to The Best T in the City with Tbose, Anonymous wants to know if there are any blind spots she could be overlooking.
“My daughter’s father was imprisoned when she was 6 months old. My daughter is now 10 and last week her father’s sister came to my mother’s doorstep to tell us baby daddy will be released in a month and he said he wanted to see his daughter.
“Now, what angered me is that they knew about me when I was dating their brother, and they also knew about my pregnancy and when I gave birth. They never once contacted my family or tried to find out how my daughter was doing.
“For the past ten years, I have been a single mother. I never told my daughter about her father. My family says I should sit her down and explain the situation and start preparing her to see her father but I am so angry, especially at his family.
“They could have offered support and built a relationship with their granddaughter, but they chose to ghost us. Am I wrong in saying I will tell my daughter about her father, but, she can only see him when she is 18, old enough to make her own choices? I don’t see why I now need to be put under pressure when I have been single-handedly taking care of my daughter. Or is my anger blinding me?”
