News 24 recently published an article discussing South Africa’s nine health MECs, noting that none of them have a medical background.
This morning, the Siz The World team discussed whether MECs and other senior government officials should be required to have qualifications in the fields they oversee.
Additionally, they debated whether the country could function effectively without a cabinet in place, referencing past instances when there was no cabinet.
President Cyril Ramaphosa recently announced the new members of the National Executive for the seventh administration, which includes all the parties to the Government of National Unity.
The eleven parties to the GNU include the African National Congress, Democratic Alliance, Patriotic Alliance, Inkatha Freedom Party, Good Party, Pan Africanist Congress of Azania, Freedom Front Plus, United Democratic Movement, Al Jama-ah, Rise Mzansi, and the United Africans Transformation.
Addressing the nation last night, President Ramaphosa said that in the previous administration, they intended to reduce the number of portfolios in the National Executive. However, due to the need to ensure that the National Executive is inclusive of all the parties to the Government of National Unity, this has not been possible.
