Defence Minister, Angie Motshekga says she remains unfazed by public criticism of her recent appointment, after she became an online meme.
The 69-year old’s questionable experience, or lack thereof for the role as Defence Minister has been the subject on recent social media trends list since President Cyril Ramaphosa announced his Cabinet on 30 June.
Speaking to SABC News after the swearing-in ceremony of Ministers on Wednesday, 03 July, Motshekga says she remains unfazed by the sceptics who are questioning her qualifications and experience for this portfolio.
“I’ve heard all the criticism, and I must tell you, even when I was appointed as the minister of basic education way back in 2009, a lot of things were being said. It’s part of the space, part of the terrain, and with time one proves themselves. So, you really don’t respond to things that you don’t know where they come from, so I’m not fazed.
It would be really dishonest of me to say I know what I’m going to do tomorrow, but I have to attend to the immediate issues. My plan is to go into the office, get handover reports, get briefings with the generals and agree with my colleagues how we are going to proceed.
New Defence Minister Angie Motshekga remains unfazed by criticism
Motshekga’s experience for the role has been questioned, with many wondering if the President appointed his Cabinet with the best candidates in mind or because he was just playing a numbers game.
The new Defence Minister will be assisted in her role by two Deputy Ministers, retired major general Bantu Holomisa from the UDM, and Richard Mkhungo.
It seems most South Africans felt Angie Motshekga as the new Defence Minister was a joke, and their reactions to the news resulted in her becoming an overnight online meme.
