Apologising is an important aspect of cultivating healthy relationships with others. While we may sometimes dread the act itself, it is necessary as it can provide closure and healing for the parties involved.
Most importantly, it is never too late to apologise.
In 2022, renowned rapper Method Man swallowed his pride and apologised to Destiny’s Child for an incident that occurred two decades ago.
Speaking to Matt Hoffa on his podcast Expert Opinion, the Wu-Tang member said that the incident reflected the man he was back then. This happened at Janet Jackson’s “MTV Icon” special in 2001.
“I see the girls, and so, you know, I kind of moseyed out of my seat to go and say what’s up to them. Now, this is me still in my low self-esteem era,” Method Man said.
“I go over to say hi to them, and when I said hi, they didn’t even turn around and acknowledge me. Now, my a— in my head with my low self-esteem is like, ‘Oh, they just s— on me.’ When in fact they didn’t even hear me, it was so loud in [there]. And that’s the excuse that I’m giving right now.”
A mutual friend of the rapper and the group tried to reconcile them, however, Method Man refused. It was only years later that he realised that he was the one in the wrong.
“I apologize to Beyoncé. I apologize to Kelly Rowland and Michelle. Y’all did not deserve that. At all.”
Sol Phenduka, Mfundo Mabalane, and Philasande Sixaba shared their own recent apology stories and invited listeners to share theirs too.
