“R190 at scrapyard” – Bronze bars on Steve Biko’s tombstone lead to arrest.
A man has been taken into custody after he allegedly stole two bronze fists that were mounted to Steve Biko’s gravestone in Ginsberg on Friday and sold them to a nearby scrapyard.
The gravestone which was unveiled on March 27, 2017, of Black Consciousness Movement leader Steve Biko was reportedly recently vandalized by criminals who stole the bronze bars fastened to it that were taken and later sold to a nearby scrapyard for a reported R190.
According to the Daily Dispatch, the suspect appeared before the Qonce magistrate’s court on Monday. SAPS who spoke to the publication confirmed the arrest of the 31-year-old man.
“A case of theft and violation of a grave has been opened after the vandalism and theft from the grave at Ginsberg, Qonce, on Friday. The information led the police to arrest a 31-year-old man and recover the stolen items,”
