Outrage grows in Ratanda after a toddler was senselessly killed and dumped in a dustbin on Wednesday, 03 April.
A Mozambican national has been arrested for 2-year old Melokuhle Ngwenya’s death.
The little girl was reported missing after her mother reportedly left her in the care of her grandfather, and after a swift search with the help of SAPS K9 Unit, the gruesome discovery was made.
Melokuhle’s lifeless body was found wrapped in plastic and dumped inside a dustbin in the neighbour’s yard.
A woman aged 33, who was the Ngwenya family’s neighbour was arrested before the angry community members could get their hands her.
Since the toddler’s death, outrage has grown in Ratanda and several foreign-owned shops have been vandalized and looted as some residents express their anger in ridding the community off foreign nationals.
The child’s mother, Zandile Ngwenya could not understand why anyone would want to kill her daughter in the most senseless way, and says no punishment would suffice for the pain she is feeling.
Speaking to Kaya News reporter Pontsho Motsepe, Zandile said when she left her little girl with her grandfather, she didn’t expect to come home to find her missing.
“I left her in the care of her grandfather while I quickly ran to the shops, and came back to find her gone without a trace.
No amount of jail time will be enough to ease my pain.
My relationship with my neighbour was a friendly one until she started accusing me of being her husband’s mistress.”
Zandile says that despite their altercation, her little girl was always playing at the neighbors house with other children without any issues.
Melokuhle who would have turned 3-years in a few months, was allegedly strangled to death by the suspect, who will be facing murder charges.
