The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has called for a credible water crisis management team to deal with the situation of dry taps in Gauteng.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 12 March the EFF said the ongoing water outages affecting over 350 000 residents in areas including Randburg, parts of Roodepoort, Westdene, Bordeaux, Blairgowrie, Cresta, Kensington, and other western suburbs of Johannesburg.
Ten days since a lightning strike hit the Eikenhof Pump Station on 02 March, there’s been a cascading of issues and excuses about the lack of water supply to various reservoirs and water towers.
With no end in sight to the water crisis in Gauteng, the EFF is calling on Johannesburg Water (JHB Water) to present a credible water crisis management plan to deal with the water outages.
“Nearly a week post-incident, no reservoir has fully recuperated, with the Linden 1 and Blairgowrie reservoirs remaining in critical states due to the high-altitude locations coupled with rising temperatures, further complicating recovery efforts.
This severe water crisis, affecting significant portions of the city including essential services like schools and clinics, highlights the vulnerability and deteriorating state of the region’s water infrastructure.
We urge JHB Water to present a credible water crisis management plan that reassures the public about the ongoing remedial actions, rather than issuing vague statements or deflecting blame onto consumers.“
The EFF says aging infrastructure, some over 70-years and inadequate maintenance and upgrade efforts are further exacerbating water outages.
Demanding the water supply to be restored within 24-hours, the EFF says the party will engage with Rand Water and Johannesburg Water to ensure the swift restoration of the fundamental right to clean and portable water to all affected residents.
