The family of 6-year old Refilwe Usman told Kaya News that her post mortem results confirm she died from poisoning.
On Tuesday, 06 February the Grade 1 learner from Mandlethu Primary School, Tsakane, Brakpan died after reportedly eating biscuits consumed from a nearby spaza shop.
Refilwe started vomitting in class but despite her parents being notified and emergency services being called for medical assistance, nothing could be done to save her.
Her father, Lucky Mkhwanazi says that he bought Refilwe the biscuits from the spaza shop on their way to school that morning because they were too late for the breakfast that’s served.
Shortly after eating the biscuits, Refilwe started experiencing difficulties, and her distraught father shared that he rushed to the school after being told that his daughter had collapsed after vomitting.
Upon arrival at the school, Mkhwanazi says he found his daughter laying on the floor near her classroom door with her eyes wide open.
Refilwe’s breathing became weaker, and she was unable to move, while her pulse dropped before ultimately stopping.
The family shared with Kaya News reporter Tsholofelo Tsoku that four other children under the age of 10-years have also been hospitalised allegedly after consuming the biscuits which were bought from the spaza shop.
Speaking to Kaya News, Refilwe’s mother said they received the post mortem results on Wednesday, 07 February and report confirmed poisoning.
The grief stricken family of Refilwe Usman say they have no means of paying for her funeral as they are both unemployed.
