Annette Breetzke, Human Capital Executive at Momentum Metropolitan Holdings (MMH) says there’s a war for talent in the country, as many professional South Africans question whether to stay or leave.
“Our South Africans skills are sought after, it’s a good thing but there’s a challenge with that.
We tend to struggle to keep our talent in our country, because there’s a limited pool of talent in South Africa and we’re not able to educate people fast enough to create the supply that’s needed.
Unfortunately, with the gaps in our education, tertiary education as well, we need to make some changes.
South African companies are in a war for talent as increased emigration has created a skills-scarce environment.”
As one of SA’s largest financial services conglomerates, Momentum Metropolitan Holdings (MMH) has flagged a lack of critical skills in the industry partly due to emigration, with a particular risk in the financial services industry.
The financial sector is falling short on actuaries, IT specialists, and other technical professionals.
Annette shares that SA is facing an acute critical skills crisis, especially African, coloured and Indian skills due to increased local and international competition and emigration.
“We face the risk of skills shortages, particularly in critical skills such as acturial, IT and technical talent.
This has amplified in the evolving working environment. Talent retention, burnout and fatigue are all concerns, especially in specialist areas, and talent attraction remains challenging.”
