Over 700 deaths have been recorded on the country’s roads over the festive season, with Gauteng accounting for the highest number of fatalities.
Minister of Transport Sindisiwe Chikunga said pedestrian fatalities have reached a critical level, making up 41% of deaths on SA roads.
The Minister shared the statistics, noting a decrease of 0.8% in crashes compared to the same period last year leading to a 4.3% decline in fatalities.
In total 719 fatalities have been recorded in the first three weeks of the 2023/24 festive season compared to 751 in the same period last year.
Gauteng accounted for 187 road fatalities, followed by KwaZulu-Natal at 135, and Limpopo where 88 people died on roads during the festive season.
