Mpho Xaba, the fiancé of late South African singer and songwriter Zahara detailed how he first met and fell in love with her, after playing hard to get.
Speaking at the multi SAMA award-winning artist’s memorial service on Thursday, 14 December, Xaba said after meeting his better half for the first time he asked himself what business he had with celebrities.
At the time, Xaba said he stood up the singer who passed away on 11 December three times before he realized that something was happening between them.
“From the first night we met, we shared deep and intimate conversations as I was not in a good space of mind myself.
After that she somehow got hold of my number from a friend and she reached out.
I was skeptical at first, I was like what business do I have with celebrities?
But, she was not speaking from a place of the pedestal that she was on at the time, it was a very human and real place.
She said she was going to say this on our wedding day, that I stood her up three times.
On the third, I made an excuse there was bad weather, and it was raining, I saw one of my friend’s statuses that there was a flood somewhere.
I asked my friend, please send me that video. My friend was like, okay and she didn’t ask questions.
I sort of like shared what was happening but she didn’t know who I was talking about. She sent me that video and I forwarded it to Zahara, and I told her that I couldn’t drive from Pretoria, there’s bad weather everywhere, and the roads are flooding.
She never responded after that for about a week. That’s when I realized, wait a minute, maybe something is happening here. Then, I was the one who reached out, and then the tables turned.”
Mpho proposed to Zahara after just 6-months of dating, and the couple reportedly had their traditional wedding a few weeks before the Loliwe hitmaker was hospitalized for a liver condition.
Zahara’s fiancé spoke about the many plans that they had as a couple, and Mpho grew emotional when he shared that he will spend his life searching for her.
“My departed love, words fail me. The void you have imposed on me has immeasurable depth.
I will search for you, through all life’s roads, and ten thousand lifetimes until I find you.”
