Safety tips for the festive season
Many of us will pack up and drive away from our homes to vacation spots as the holiday season draws near.
Theft and vehicle hijacking claims have surged to unsustainable heights, with thieves turning their sights from older, low-value cars to more recent, high-value bakkies and SUVs. To try to prevent becoming a victim of the terrible experience, it’s critical to stay watchful and aware.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Pogiso Dibakoane who discussed some beneficial road rules and safety tips ahead of the festive season.

Stay off your phone while driving
“It’s that time of the year, I think the biggest mistake that drivers make is being on their phone when they are at the robots or be it a stop sign, that is when the smash and grabs happen.” says Dibakoane
Make sure you keep the energy levels optimal
Every two hours, you should pull over to get out of your car and stretch your legs. To maintain focus and avoid fatigue, try to drink plenty of water and rotate drivers every few hours.
Don’t drink and drive
Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is forbidden and very risky.
To lower your risk while driving, you should try to avoid driving whenever you can during the holiday season as many drivers are operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

Your car needs to be in tip-top condition
- Make sure your brakes and tires are in good operating order and take your car for a roadworthy inspection.
- Ascertain that every tire has a minimum of 1 mm of tread, that your spare wheel is in good shape, and that you have all the tools required to change a wheel.
- Make sure you have a high-quality flashlight and a reflective triangle with you so you can alert other drivers to the fact that your car has broken down.
- Before the trip, check your windows for any chips or cracks and get them fixed. Verify the functionality of your window wipers and replace them if needed.
Have a co-pilot
Try driving with a passenger if you are traveling long distances, this will keep you entertained and responsible.
