The motion to cut diplomatic ties and close the Israeli embassy received support from about 248 Members of Parliament (MPs), during the vote 91 MPs in all, mostly from the DA, ACDP, and IFP, voted against the proposal.
Since October 7, over 13,000 Palestinians have lost their lives as a result of Israeli bombardment. According to Parliament, the sanctions will remain in effect until Israel consents to a ceasefire and takes part in talks that are facilitated by the UN.
The vote was held following the announcement by Israel’s foreign ministry that Eliav Belotserkovsky, the country’s ambassador to South Africa, had been called back to Jerusalem “for consultations.”

Last week, South Africa declared that it had requested an investigation into what it described as Israel’s “genocide” in Gaza from the International Criminal Court.
Furthermore, the South African government has called on the ICC to issue an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
