The South African Depression and Anxiety Group want mental illness to be treated like any other health condition.
This, it says, will help to get rid of the stigma associated with it.
The group has been speaking out following the passing of Anele Tembe – fianceé of rapper AKA.
Tembe died after falling from the 10th storey of a hotel in Cape Town.
Her death was allegedly the result of a suicide. Police are investigating.
SADAG spokesperson Nkini Phasha says people should educate themselves on various mental disorders.
“People living with mental disorders tend to keep quiet about their conditions and in turn they actually self-stigmatise.
“There is certainly help for people who are living with a mental condition or perhaps their loved one might be suffering form a type of mental disorder.”
