Springbok winger Cheslin Kolbe recently took to social media to celebrate his daughter Mila Sky’s 3rd birthday. His wife, Lyla, also joined in to mark their daughter’s special day.
“You are so special; you have the most sass with the most extra poses; you love hard but also hit hard; yet you have the softest heart. My blondie, curly Sue, I love you so much Mila girl. You are truly one of a kind! Birthday blessings my baby girl.”
Layla took to social media after the Boks’ 2019 World Cup win to express her joy and reveal her own sacrifice. She left her career to fulfil her dream of becoming a chartered accountant to support her husband, Cheslin.
“Yes, I left for rugby. I left to back my husband. I witnessed all his crit, all the Springbok call-ups, camps, and long tours, but never getting selected. I witnessed all the great seasons, but there was still no Springbok debut. Because of size.
I witnessed how this man still perseveres and still puts his all on that field every time, despite it all. I can’t explain what a roller coaster these past few years has been.“To just see him be a part of such a phenomenal squad was one of the proudest moments for me. The World Cup was one of the best yet emotional experiences. We were one if not the only team that got to share the hotel room with our partners. Yor, how we prayed in hotel rooms. We were in their space maybe a bit too much, so we would wander the streets of Japan sometimes till late at night alone (Japan was amazing though, so not complaining). I saw him ice and ice with that sore ankle. We thought we might be going home before the final, I saw him so down, spending hours in the physio room every day, coming back to room still sore and still just so down. So we just prayed more and more.
“We grew so strong as a family and as a team. Shoo!!! I can’t even explain how different this is for us, as a family, as a team, and for our nation. We needed this. Through it all, no CA qualification could have ever replaced witnessing not only Cheslin make it, But witnessing a nation with so many underprivileges and heartache, witnessing hundreds of kids in townships running freely with joy and hope, videos of bars packed and people singing “OLÉ” arm in arm, streets packed with people from all backgrounds—all together in unity!!! All Celebrating this victory. That is flippen special.”
