Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga and her bodyguards were robbed at gunpoint on the N3 highway on Monday, 06 November.
South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed that a case of armed robbery has been opened and is under investigation.
Chikunga and her convoy were travelling on the N3 highway near Heidelberg at the time of the robbery.
According to Mathe, the Minister’s blue-light convoy were forced to stop to change a punctured tyre when they were approached by armed men.
The suspects made off with cellphones and firearms which belonged to the Minister’s bodyguards.
“Members involved are receiving necessary support and counselling from the SAPS Employee Health and Wellness Unit.
These members have been relieved from their duties and the Minister has been provided with other resources until such time that she is fit and proper to return to her post.
Steps are underway to determine what transpired in as far as VIP protection protocols are concerned, and an officer has since been appointed to conduct a determination investigation.”
