Gauteng police have seized rifles and ammunition believed to be linked to the N12 cash-in-transit heist in a backroom in Mapetla, Soweto.
An intelligence driven operation which involved police tracing the suspects led police to the undisclosed location whee two rifles including an AK47, magazines and 71 rounds of ammunition were found.
This after the brazen heist on the N12 highway put the spotlight on police for their slow reaction.
It took police 30-minutes to respond to the heist, which occurred just outside Diepkloof on Saturday, 07 October.
Suspects cornered the CIT vehicle before using explosives to gain access to an undisclosed amount of money.
“Police investigations and the tracing of suspects believed to be a group of between 15 to 20 continues.
The units involved in this operation include the Anti-Gang Unit (AGU), Organised Crime Investigations (OCI) and Gauteng Highway Patrol.
During the search and seize operation, balaclavas, handcuffs, beanies, protective shoes, as well as cash receipt slips of bank deposits were also seized.
At the said identified address, police forced open a backroom where they found and seized two rifles, including an AK47, magazines, and 71 rounds of ammunition.”
Police urged members of the public not to pick up money from CIT crime scenes, saying it is a crime and those found to be doing so, can be charged with theft and defeating the ends of justice.
Since January, there have been 249 CIT heists across the country.
