Gabon’s Coup Leader General Brice Oligui Nguema, sworn in as interim President.
The general who overthrew Gabon’s 55-year-old ruling dynasty last week, Brice Oligui Nguema, has taken the oath of office as Gabon’s interim president.
Nguema vowed to fast-track “free, transparent, and credible elections” to reinstate civilian government, though he did not provide a timeline.
The removal occurred shortly after Bongo, 64, was declared the winner of the presidential elections, a decision the opposition deemed fraudulent.
According to Al Jazeera, Ali Bongo Ondimba had served two terms since coming to power in 2009 after the death of his father who ruled the country for 41 years, and there was widespread discontent with his family’s reign.

Bongo, a member of a family that has ruled the oil-rich nation of central Africa since 1967, was arrested last Wednesday under the direction of Nguema, the republican guard’s chief.
Scenes of jubilation across the nation were widely shared on social media as he ascended to power.
