The 959 Breakfast team stumbled upon a video on social media featuring a mother and daughter, both parents themselves, engaging in a conversation about their distinct parenting styles. This video sheds light on how millennials approach parenting with a wealth of knowledge, which in turn leads to anxiety.
To delve deeper into this topic, the team invited parent and family coach Ayanda Tetyana to share her insights on bridging the gap between these parenting styles.
Tetyana emphasizes the tendency to overcomplicate parenting, noting, “We are making it a little bit extra. I think about any parent who has had more than one child. You know, with the first child, you want everything to be set, but with the second child, you are not as worried.”
According to Tetyana, we often find ourselves juggling the pressures we see on social media with the realities of our own financial resources. So, how can we change our mindset? Tetyana suggests that the key lies in establishing clear parenting objectives. She elaborates:
“Be clear about what your objective is 20–18 years from now when your child has to move out and go into the adult world. You are going to factor your whole parenting philosophy around that idea.
Tetyana also advises against blindly following parenting advice on social media. Instead, she encourages us to conduct our own research and form our own opinions. Whenever we try something new, it is important to make notes and reflect on how it impacts our parenting style.
