The dynamic of emotional incest where a man is too attached to his mother to the point of neglecting his wife is very common in many marriages.
It occurs in instances when their mother-in-law is present, these women feel marginalized since their husband prioritizes his mother’s needs, wants, and opinions over those of his wife.
The way they maintain the home, dress, raise the children, and attend to their husband’s demands is criticized by their mothers-in-law.

According to Healthline, emotional incest is an unhealthy family dynamic where a parent relies on their child for emotional and practical advice and support. It also refers to inappropriate emotional closeness.
Nhlanhla and Magauta Zwane unpacked different scenarios where a husband has an emotional closeness to their parent, to the point of neglecting you.
Magauta explains that mothers tend to be overbearing, creating these troublesome close relationships for married men.
“Usually children have a personality, among your children, you have this child that you like more than the other because they are agreeable, they are easy and are reasonable, and don’t keep you on your toes. You find out that you have this particular son who has a soft spot for you” said Magauta,
Nhlanhla also explained that there are cases where the boy and the mother have a strong bond based on an abusive father who caused trauma leading to the man vowing to protect the mother at the expense of the wife’s emotional needs.
