Advocate Kholeka Gcaleka has been nominated by an Ad Hoc Committee for position of Public Protector.
The acting Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka has been nominated by Parliament’s ad hoc committee, which was established to choose the next Public Protector (PP), to lead the Chapter Nine institution.
Eight of the applicants on the committee’s short list were interviewed last week.
The final three candidates were the acting incumbent, Deputy Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka, Coordinator for the Office of the Chief Justice Tseliso Thipanyane, and Pension Fund Administrator Muvhango Lukhaimane.
The ANC and the IFP both suggested that Gcaleka be the chosen candidate.
The Democratic Alliance, Freedom Front Plus, and Economic Freedom Fighters opposed the suggestion that Gcaleka succeed Busisiwe Mkhwebane, the suspended PP.

The ad hoc committee established to find Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s replacement decided to put Gcaleka forward as its applicant.
This choice will be presented to the National Assembly, where it will be discussed and put to a vote by all political parties.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will still be in charge of making the final appointment.
