Residents of Itireleng Informal Settlement in Laudium, Pretoria have expressed a mixture of sorrow and relief following the arrest of two individuals in connection with a devastating shack fire that claimed the lives of five children. The incident has shocked the close-knit community and prompted calls for accountability.
The South African Police Service apprehended the mother of three of the deceased children and the grandmother of the remaining two. Reports suggest that the tragic event unfolded as the pair allegedly locked the shack and left for a local tavern, leaving behind an unattended stove. The uncontrolled blaze resulted in the complete destruction of the dwelling, and the loss of young lives.
Kaya News correspondent Pitso Molemane, reporting from the scene, noted the somber mood prevailing in the settlement. Community members gathered around the charred remains of the shack, grieving the tragic loss of life. Many are demanding that the sisters face consequences for their actions, believing that this will serve as a deterrent against similar instances of negligence in the future.
The impact of the tragedy goes beyond the immediate loss of life. Concerns have been raised about the unsafe and illegal electricity connections that many residents rely on. Some inhabitants fear for their safety due to appliances remaining plugged in during loadshedding periods. The subsequent power surges upon electricity restoration can lead to appliances being damaged or even exploding.
In the wake of the incident, Gauteng Human Settlement MEC Lebogang Maile visited the site to assess the situation. He expressed his belief that the Itireleng Informal Settlement should be demolished, advocating for the relocation of its residents to safer accommodations. Maile’s visit followed the discovery of the children’s bodies after the fire was extinguished.

The tragic event has sparked calls for collective support from the community and stakeholders. MEC Maile stated that businesses, residents, and various stakeholders would collaborate to ensure a dignified burial for the five young victims. The MEC underlined that such a tragedy could have been avoided if those entrusted with the children had not neglected their responsibilities.
As the investigation into the incident continues, the community remains united in grief, demanding justice for the lives lost and striving for safer living conditions for all residents of Itireleng Informal Settlement. The event serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of vigilance and care in safeguarding the lives of vulnerable individuals.
