All ANC leaders who are facing criminal charges have been given 30 days to resign or face being suspended.
The decision was reached by the party’s National Executive Committee.
President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the closing address on Monday night.
Provinces will now have to compile lists of everyone who is facing charges. The list must be presented to the secretary-general’s office.
The office will now be led by deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte.
This is because the current secretary-general, Ace Magashule, is facing corruption charges related to the Free State asbestos case.
Ramaphosa says the decision is non-negotiable.

Wait and see
Meanwhile, Kaya 959 resident political analyst Dr Sthe Mbethe says the NEC decision will bring back trust within the ANC.
Dr Mbethe says it will be interesting to see whether leaders will step aside as per the party’s resolution.
“I think we will know whether or not this is really meaningful if people are actually suspended.
‘And so, I think it is a bit too early to tell about what this means for the ANC. We need to wait and see whether it has actual impact and whether the resolution is followed through,” she said.
Ace Magashule supporters object
The NEC’s decision means Magashule is now facing suspension. But his supporters have threatened to resign if he is made to step aside.
The ANC leader is facing 74 counts of fraud, corruption, and money laundering over the Free State’s R233-million asbestos roof audit.
He is set to appear in the Bloemfontein High Court in August.
