Two Gauteng schoolboys have taken their own lives, highlighting that the emotional wellbeing of learners is a shared responsibility.
Gauteng Education MEC, Matome Chiloane is said to be saddened by the two separate suicide cases which were reported on Tuesday, 08 August.
One of the boys, a Grade 10 learner, resorted to hanging himself in a dormitory on Monday, 07 August at the Soshanguve Secure Center.
It has been reported that the learner was taken to the juvenile center two weeks ago and was awaiting trial.
The second boy, a Grade 9 learner from Kgetsi Ya Tsie Secondary School, tragically took his own life at home, on the same day.
“These incidents serve as a grim reminder that the emotional wellbeing of learners is a shared responsibility that requires immediate attention from all of us.
As we mourn the loss of young lives, there is a growing determination to prevent future tragedies and to foster a culture of support, compassion and understanding within the educational community.
We wish to extend our condolences to the families and school communities.”
Chiloane said the Department’s Psycho-Social Support Unit will be dispatched to provide assistance to both schools.
