Kelly Khumalo has been dropped from a Woman’s Day event, due to concerns raised about the gospel singer and possible implications that she may have been in contact with one of the men accused of murdering her ex-boyfriend, footballer, Senzo Meyiwa.
Tribute to Women noted with concern, the backlash Kelly has been subjected amid the Meyiwa murder trial.
Last week, SAPS National Cold Case Unit Colonel Lambertus Steyn, made the startling revelation that Kelly Khumalo received two calls from accused No.5, Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli, before Meyiwa was gunned down at the Khumalos’ family home in Vosloorus.
Steyn said cellphone data proved the number belonged to Kelly, noting the two occasions the calls came through on 02 August 2014, and then again on 15, October 2014, just days before Meyiwa was killed in what the State is calling a “botched home invasion.”
While Tribute to Women says they believe Kelly is innocent until proven guilty, to safeguard the event which is set to take place on 12 August, at the Emmarentia Dam, the decision to drop the Empini hitmaker from the event’s lineup was made.
“We have noted, with concern, various comments on social media platforms and calls from many patrons of our festival. We respect the legal processes and wish to indicate that Ms. Kelly Khumalo is innocent until proven otherwise.
However, in the interest of safeguarding our festival, management has taken the decision to relieve Ms. Khumalo of her obligations to perform at our festival this year to afford her and her team the time they require to deal with the issues emanating from the current court proceedings.”
