The Barbie movie frenzy has sparked a rise in doll sales in South Africa, despite the pricy cost of the blonde-haired and blue-eyed popular brand.
Barbie, the movie, which stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling is based off the iconic doll that every little girl wants to have.
Living in their seemingly perfect world, Barbie and her plastic male counterpart, Ken, raked in over $200 million on opening weekend at the Box Office.
The Barbie doll, which is a signature collectable doll by toy company Mattel, has reported a 30% rise in sales in South Africa.
This according to toy retailer, Toys R Us, who say the dolls are moving fast of its shelves, together with Barbie accessories such as doll houses, and clothing.
It’s not just little girls however that are giving into the all-pink hype around the Barbie movie, as a number of adults, including celebrities have shared images of themselves in their best Barbie look.
Releasing their inner Barbie, both Sorisha Naidoo and Faith Nketsi rocked classic Barbie looks to attend the movie’s premier last week.
The dolls retail from R280 to R1 400, and due to the cost, the Barbie brand has always received backlash for excluding a large number of children, whose families may not be able to afford the dolls.
With 110 variations of the doll, there’s a Barbie doll for almost every season, career, fashionista and the dolls are sold in Toys R Us stores across the country.
