Terrifying scenes from Johannesburg CBD gripped social media on Wednesday evening, 19 July, after a gas line explosion ripped through the city center.
Videos and pictures that can best be described as a post-apocalyptic scene from a movie, shows stretches of road on Bree Street completely destroyed.
Massive sinkholes, across one of the busiest streets in the CBD, have left several commuters injured due to taxis overturning as a result of the blast.
The explosion occurred just after 17h00 during busy, peak afternoon traffic.
Point of View with Phemelo Motene spoke to Mining Expert David van Wyk about what may have caused the explosion in the Joburg CBD following speculation that it may also be linked to illegal mining.
van Wyk says it’s unlikely that the explosion was caused by illegal mining.

Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi confirmed the gas line explosion on the corner of Bree and Simon Street.
Mulaudzi said it was too soon to tell how many people have been injured and whether there have been any fatalities from the explosion, as emergency personnel were still busy on scene evacuating people from overturned vehicles.
While the cause of the explosion could not be confirmed at this stage, Mulaudzi said more information will be released as and when it becomes available.
This is a developing story.
