SAPS has confirmed that 4 of the 8 VIP protection unit members who were filmed assaulting 3 occupants of a VW Polo have been suspended.
The three men who were assaulted by Deputy President, Paul Mashatile’s security detail are said to be South African National Defence Force (SANDF) trainees.
One of the men who was kicked in the head repeatedly was left motionless on the side of the road, after the attack.
South African Police Union Spokesperson, Lesiba Thobakgale spoke to Phemelo Motene about police brutality and how members of the SAPS.
National Police Spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe said on Tuesday, 04 July that an internal investigation into the incident was underway, however after mass public outrage over what the DA calls ‘blue-light bullies”, SAPS suspended four of the VIP protection unit members.
This was confirmed by Mathe on Wednesday morning, who declined to comment on the outcome for the remaining four members.
“In terms of the disciplinary regulations they have been served with notices of the employer’s intention to suspend.
They must provide representation why they should not be suspended under the circumstances. Representation will be considered and the outcome will be communicated to them.”
On Tuesday, Mashatile confirmed that the members were part of his security detail, however he claims he was not in the convoy at the time of the assault.
