The SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) has awarded a tender to upgrade a highway in KZN worth R4.7 billion to a company with directors who are facing fraud and corruption charges,
The agency, says it is because there is no law prohibiting them from giving contracts to criminally charged persons or companies who are yet to be found guilty.
Joining in on the discussion, Executive Director of the accountability division at ALTA, Stefani Fick said the following in part:
“Let us be fair. When you are an accused, the Constitution says you are not guilty until proven guilty. But we need strong and ethical leadership and if you look at a big contract like that,” she expressed.
“Should that not be part of the process when you award tenders? If you were convicted of fraud, theft, or corruption then you should not be in any position of power.”
