The Independent Police Investigating Directorate (IPID) is investigating the death of an Johannesburg Metro Police Officer (JMPD) who was gunned down allegedly by an off-duty SAPS officer over the weekend.
This after graphic video footage detailing an altercation between the two officer went viral on Monday, 26 June.
According to IPID national spokesperson, Robbie Raburabu, the JMPD officer died on scene, outside a nightclub in Braamfontein.
“IPID is still investigating the matter. The SAPS officer allegedly shot and killed the JMPD officer. The JMPD officer died on scene.”
Eyewitness account detail the JMPD officer being shot more than 5 times in the chest, after attempting to pull the SAPS officer out of a white vehicle.
The SAPS officer was behind the wheel of the vehicle, and opened fire on the JMPD officer when he went to the front of his vehicle.
Police have asked the public to refrain from sharing the graphic video on social media.
