DJ Maphorisa made a brief appearance at the Randburg Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 14 June, in relation to the gender-based violence case against him.
Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, better known by his stage name DJ Maphorisa, will now need to wait to hear whether the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) will be dropping the assault case against him.
This after Maphorisa’s girlfriend, Thuli Phongolo withdrew the charges against him.
In a joint statement issued shortly after news of Maphorisa assauling Thuli P broke last month, the couple confirmed that the actress decided to withdraw the charges she laid at the Sandton Police Station.
“The matter has received mixed public attention, causing a great deal of emotional stress on both parties involved.
It is on this basis that the parties have since elected to resolve this matter privately through their receptive management and legal teams. Consequently, Phongolo has since withdrawn the charges laid against Sekowe at the SAPS, Sandton Station.
Both parties have noted with concern, the disparaging, defamatory and (in some instances) untrue remarks, statements and reports emanating from the incident and view these in a serious light.
The parties reserve their rights to individually pursue legal action against persons making defamatory and. or false statements in relations to this matter.”

As reported by News24, the decision on whether Maphorisa will face charges, regardless of Thuli P’s withdrawal lays with the NPA.
Because there’s an increase in gender-based violence cases in the country, the NPA does not accept withdrawal statements.
This means, Thuli P will need to make representations to the NPA as to why she wants to withdraw the charges.
