Reddit users and developers have gone dark in protest of new changes to the site’s API. The API, which used to allow third-party developers to create apps that interact with Reddit, has been free to use for the past 15 years.
This past April, Reddit announced that it would begin charging for API access. The new pricing structure is based on usage, with developers paying more for higher levels of usage.
This has led to several popular third-party Reddit apps, such as Apollo and Sync, announcing that they will either shut down or stop developing new features. In response, thousands of Reddit communities have gone dark in protest.
Reddit has defended the changes, saying that the API costs a lot of money to run and that the new pricing structure will allow it to invest in improving the API. However, many users and developers are unhappy with the changes, arguing that they will make it more difficult for people to use Reddit and that they are unfair to the developers who have built successful businesses around the API.
