The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the death of lead investigator in the Thabo Bester case, from suspected suicide on Monday, 05 June.
Brigadier Jackson Mkhaulesi reportedly stopped his white Ford Ranger on a busy intersection in Bloemfontein in broad daylight, before shooting himself.
National spokesperson for SAPS, Athlenda Mathe said the circumstances around Mkhaulesi’s death is under police investigation.
Mathe said the Head of Organised Crime in the Free State held a 31-year service record with SAPS and was a hardworking, loyal and dedicated senior officer.
“The SAPS sadly confirms the death of one of its senior investigators in the Thabo Bester escape case, Brigadier Jackson Mkhaulesi.
Circumstances surrounding the death of the senior officer, who is also the Head of Organised Crime in the Free State remains the subject of a police investigation.
National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Fannie Masemola has expressed his condolences to the family, describing Mkhaulesi as a hardworking, loyal and dedicated detective for 31-years.
Over the years, Mkhaulesi has proved himself to be a highly skilled detective, with a wealth of knowledge and experience. His departure leaves a void in the SAPS detective environment.”

Brigadier Mkhaulesi’s suspected suicide comes just a short while after the Free State High Court dismissed Dr Nandipha Magudumana’s urgent application to rule her arrest in Tanzania wrongful.
Judge Philip Loubser handed down the judgement, ruling that Magudumana is to remain in custody.
