The DA filed a public protector complaint after it found that the ANC government spent R93 million on maintaining 97 mansions valued at nearly R1 billion.
Among the many expenses to maintain the ANC homes are:
- A renovated kitchen for R1.4 million
- Fumigation for R240 000
- Replacing lightbulbs for R19000
The DA claims that these expenses “bear tell-tale signs of massive tender corruption.”
The report further highlights that the ministers are exempt from loadshedding thanks to generators.
Close to R50 million was spent maintaining generators and refilling diesel generators in the past two years.
This comes weeks after Minister Pravin Gordhan released a statement that says government will appeal the North Gauteng High Court ruling to exempt schools, hospitals, clinics, and police stations from loadshedding. This will prevent key facilities from having access to electricity to alleviate an already strained grid.
Other expenses include the installation and maintenance of air conditioners, maintenance of cameras, and electric fences.
👀 R1.4 million for a new kitchen? A quarter of a million rand to fumigate cockroaches? R53 000 for a curtain rail, and R19 000 for lightbulbs?

While free electricity, water, and municipal rates are part of the perks of being a minister in South Africa, these perks are now in question with the current state of the country.
The DA will report its findings to the Public Protector and has already tabled the Cut Cabinet Perks Bill in Parliament.
