Last month, It was reported that legendary South African musician Caiphus Semenya was “demanding payment for the royalties of well-known songs that AKA sampled from his catalog without his consent.”
According to Sunday World, Semenya demanded 50% of the royalties from two songs.
Speaking to podcaster Nkululeko this week, Semenya said that the journalist who ran with the story is trying to paint him as a”cold man” which he is not.
He puts it on record that although it was later on, “AKA did ask for permission for the sample of Caiphus Song.“
Semenya is baffled by the claims that he is “demanding 50%” as he has someone who handles his sampling. ” There was never a time when I negotiated a song,” added the legend.
He revealed that the only sample yet to be cleared is Hamba Nam We with Letta Mbulu which is in the new album. Semenya “sympathizes” with AKA and knows he “would’ve fixed it” if he was alive. “There is no song that is worth his life,” he commiserated.
Reminiscing about the first time he met AKA, the legend says he told the rapper he “did a wonderful job on the song (Caiphus song)” and then “hugged” him.
AKA was gunned down outside WISH restaurant in Durban with his friend and former manager Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane.
Speaking to YOU Magazine recently, AKA’s parents shared that there have been no developments in the rapper’s brutal murder investigation.
