Fugitives Thabo Bester and Dr Nandipha were arrested in Tanzania on Saturday evening.
Minister of Justice Ronald Lamola confirmed the pair’s arrest at a media briefing on Saturday afternoon.
“The Minister of Police and the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services can confirm that escapee, Mr Thabo Bester….with his accomplice, also known as Dr Nandipha Magudumana, along with a Mozambican national, has been arrested in Tanzania late last night,” said Lamola.
He added that the authorities in Tanzania will decide if this is a ‘clear case of deportation’ or take the ‘Interpol route.’
Police minister Bheki Cele revealed that Thabo Bester and Dr Nandi were arrested ‘as they were about to cross the border into another country in a black SUV.’
Bester was convicted of raping two women who were aspiring models in 2011. In a separate case, he was convicted of robbing and killing a third woman.
Thabo Bester escaped from the Mangaung Correctional Centre in May 2022.
