The national state of disaster brought on by the power situation has been ended by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
On Wednesday, 5 April, the department published the notice, which includes the dismissal from the department and the revocation of the Head of the National Disaster Management Center’s designation of the severe power supply constraint as a national disaster.
“All regulations and directions made in terms of section 27(2) of the [National Disaster] Act pursuant to the declaration of the national state of disaster to deal with the impact or the severe electricity supply constraint is hereby repealed with immediate effect.”

The current Eskom electricity crisis in the nation has caused irreparable harm to the nation and poses an existential threat to businesses and the economy, leading to the declaration of the state of disaster on February 9th, 2023.
“The State of Disaster was a necessary response to the impact of critical levels of load shedding on the economy and vulnerable sectors such as health and small businesses,”
“These regulations and the underlying actions were put in place in support of the Energy Action Plan (EAP). This was to support an effective and integrated response across all spheres of government,” CoGTA said in a statement.
Civil action group Outa and trade union Solidarity both took the government to court for declaring the state of disaster.
