The City of Tshwane finally has a new mayor, after DA councillor and former MP, Cilliers Brink was elected with 109 votes.
Brink’s election comes after much controversy over the seat, with Cope’s Murunwa Makwarela resigning due to fraudulent papers over his financial rehabilitation.
Winning the metro by just 7 votes in his favour, Brink promised the people of Tshwane that the city is now in good hands.
Speaking after his victory, Brink said the City’s finances will now be properly managed, and his priority will be to address the power outages and reduce reliance on Eskom.
“It is an honour to serve the people of Tshwane through the office of the mayor. I hope that this brings to an end the type of politics that we’ve seen in the council chamber, and I hope this brings a period of stability.
Our mission as a multi-party coalition, is to build a capital city that works, for all of its people. We will draw on the inspiration of those municipalities that are breaking new ground such as the city of Cape Town.”

However, Brink’s election was not met with much enthusiasm, with many residents saying the DA has previously failed to deliver on empty promises.
