Members of the Unity Fellowship Church in Soweto gathered outside the Protea Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning, demanding the release of their leaders.
The gathering comes after members of the church and the pastor were arrested on Sunday.
This is after police went to the church on Sunday following a noise complaint, where about 2,000 congregants gathered. This is despite lockdown regulations prohibiting indoor gatherings of more than 100 people.
Upon arrival, angry churchgoers allegedly attacked the police officials and their vehicles.
The officers had to use rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
Some church members and the officers were injured and had to be taken to hospital.
The congregants are now facing various charges, including malicious damage to property, public violence, and contravention of Disaster Management Act.
The leader , Pastor Mpfariseni Mukhuba, is expected to appear at the Protea Magistrates Court today.
Spokesperson for JMPD Wayne Minaar said they are in the area to ensure there is law and order.
