Over 1000 matriculants are implicated in an exam cheating scandal which involved bribing teachers up to R1500 for the correct answers.
On Monday, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) said it is investigating an anonymous tip involving at least 1127 matriculants from Mpumalanga.
The learners reportedly agreed to pay teachers R1500 for the answers to several papers over a WhatsApp group.
All this was done while learners were writing papers.
DBE spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga slammed a false report by News24 which claimed that the exam cheating scandal included schools across 6 provinces.
” For now the department is investigating three schools in Mpumalanga, and there are no other provinces implicated at present.
It is unfortunate that there is another cheating scandal but all those involved will be brought to task. We’re hoping that more people will come forward to speed up the investigation.”
Mhlanga said that marking process had already started, and they would be paying close attention to the answers learners at the implicated schools had put forward.
More details will be released as the department continues its investigation.
