Masekela shared how the vision to the creation of Swim School Soweto can from her upbringing and realising that something new and interesting was needed for the community of Soweto.
“I think we all know that in the townships we’ve always had public pools, overcrowded, not always clean, never well managed. My husband and I grew up in the township and we were always bothered about the lack of facilities for children living in the townships.
“As we grew older we started travelling and we would come back and ask ourselves what are we doing. We started thinking that our children are really tired of playing soccer and that we need to bring something new, something interesting.”
“We realised that we have a lot of challenges in the township with drug use, and we asked ourselves how we can create an environment for children to be disrupted.”said Masekela
