Another child has been mauled to death by a pit bull, which brings the number of fatal attacks on children up to three within a week.
The latest pit bull attack took place in Cambridge, East London on Wednesday, 23 November. Further details surrounding the incident are unknown at this stage, but authorities confirmed that the child was just a year old.
The toddler was rushed to the Frere Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Authorities say the pit bull belonged to a family in the community.
This marks the 5th pit bull attack on children since September, with thousands calling for a ban of the breed in South Africa.
The first attack was 10-year old Storm Nuku, was mauled to death by the family’s pit bull dogs in Gqeberha.
Two more children were fatally attacked by pit bulls in Bloemfontein (8-year old) and Free State (3-year old) in November.
Another attack on a 3-year old in Cape Town over the weekend saw the community of Gatesfield, stab, stone and burn 3 pit bulls to death.
The child sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital.
As more pit bull owners across the country are surrendering their dogs to SPCA branches, government has called for owners to be more responsible as attacks on children climb.
Both the EFF and Cosatu have backed the call for the dogs to be banned, however many pit bull owners say they will fight this move.
They are instead calling for ownership of these animals to be licensed and regulated and the owners to be held accountable for their dogs.
This is a developing story.
